Air Quality

with Florida Climate Solutions

Could the air you are breathing in be harmful to your health and lead to lasting health effects? It is easy to forget about air as a potential risk factor for our health because we can’t tangibly see air to consider its power.

Most Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors. Additionally, indoor air pollution is typically much worse than outdoor air quality unless you take steps to filter it properly. Indoor air pollution effects your health in more ways than you know.

The risks and who’s affected?

The United States Environmental Protection Agency studies indicate that indoor pollutants are often 2 to 5 times higher than typical outdoor concentrations

Some health effects may show up shortly after a single exposure or repeated exposures to a pollutant. These include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Such immediate effects are usually short-term and treatable. Sometimes the treatment is simply eliminating the person's exposure to the source of the pollution, if it can be identified. Soon after exposure to some indoor air pollutants, symptoms of some diseases such as asthma may show up, be aggravated or worsened.

Other health effects may show up either years after exposure has occurred or only after long or repeated periods of exposure. These effects, which include some respiratory diseases, heart disease and cancer, can be severely debilitating or fatal. It is prudent to try to improve the indoor air quality in your home even if symptoms are not noticeable.

Indoor pollutants may include:

  • Mold

  • Bacteria

  • Viruses

  • Animal parts or by-products (Dander, waste, etc.)

  • Plant parts or by-products (Pollen, etc.)

  • Carbon Dioxide

  • Carbon Monoxide

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

  • Radon

  • Lead (In Pre-1978 Homes)

  • Asbestos

  • Smoke from tobacco use
